We are talking about African philosophy for only 80 years, since 1944. The lecture will present the four main trends of philosophical practice in Sub-Saharan Africa: ethnophilosophy, sage philosophy, nationalistic ideological philosophy and professional philosophy, and the disputes between the universalists and separatists on how African philosophy could keep its traditional identity, and at the same time gain universal recognition as rational knowledge. Then the lecture will offer a new approach in this matter to African philosophers: a) to accept philosophy as a method of life and spiritual exercise, based on theory that encompasses a vision and a rational argumentation – a vision that is rooted in the common background of the culture’s mythos, as discussed in the culture’s logos, and thus accepting one’s embodiment and sense of belonging to a society and to the world; b) to discard both the Anglo-American critical “scientific” model of analytical philosophy and the French erudite “journalist” model of socio-political philosophy as the only acceptable methods and models of comparison and to seek analogies also in non-Western philosophies (Chinese, Indian); c) to replace the axiom linear proof means with fractal, synoptic, harmonious access. A metaphor of climbing Kilimanjaro will be used.
