Climate Change and the Hydrogen Economy
SO Gilsu
Abstract

1. The era of hydrogen economy. The UN Climate Change Conference COP27, 2022 stated “The world is in a critical decade for climate action. Limiting warming to around 1.5°C requires global greenhouse gas emissions to start falling by 2025, and to be reduced by 43% by 2030. That leaves just 7 short years from now.” It has already been confirmed that 90% of climate change comes from human activities, of which 55% is due to carbon dioxide. All governments are struggling to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and are investing in a hydrogen economy in various ways (in production, transport and others), because hydrogen is the only energy that can replace fossil fuels.

2. Global project for Hydrogen economy

Now humanity needs a 4th industrial revolution not for progress and advancement of human life, but to save a crisis humanity. And I could say that the successful transformation to a hydrogen economy would be a 4th industrial revolution. Here are some details:

  • (1) What is hydrogen economy.
  • (2) hydrogen product (color spectrum of hydrogen product).
  • (3) use of hydrogen in various industrial fields.

(4) the hydrogen economy projects of the EU, Asia and America.

Europe is speeding up the 'European Hydrogen backbone' project, which plans to build a 2,800㎞ hydrogen pipeline by 2030. Chile, Brazil, Australia and Egypt are investing in producing renewable energy 'hydrogen'. China's hydrogen strategy aims to ensure energy security and self-reliance, Japan and South Korea are rapidly developing hydrogen technology for industry and, above all, automobiles.

3. Hydrogen Vehicle in 2035

- An electric vehicle (EV) or a hydrogen vehicle (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle=FCEV)? The Parliament and EU countries reached an agreement on the final form of the rules in October 2022. From 2035, all new cars should be zero-emissions and cannot emit any CO₂(News European Parliament). The situation is the same in the United States and Asian countries, we have to choose either an electric or hydrogen car. And we already have to discuss the following things.

  • (1) the history of hydrogen vehicle.
  • (2) the mechanics of a hydrogen vehicle.
  • (3) the production of hydrogen and its cost
  • (4) the hydrogen storage problem.
  • (5) my 3-years experience of hydrogen car

4. Conclusion - how should we act towards the new transformation of energy?

Active participation as a good consumer is necessary.
