Turin has a special value for esperantists and in general for interlinguists: in the years 1910-1939 it was the seat of an international organization "Academia pro Interlingua", in which various proposals and opinions on the construction, introduction and use of an international auxiliary language converged, in a model collaboration of linguists and other scientists from various nations around the world.
The original "World Language Academy" was founded in 1887 in Munich to develop and promote Volapük, the first successful planned language. After a transition phase, during which it used the Latin naturalistic planned language Idiom Neutral, its director became the mathematician Giuseppe Peano from Turin (he was a disciple of Enrico d'Ovidio, former rector of the Turin Polytechnic - our congress center). Since 1910, the Academy has been officially registered in Turin. It became opened for supporters of all forms of Latin-based interlanguage: on the pages of its bulletin"Discussiones" and later in the magazine "Schola et Vita" dozens of planned language projects were discussed and scientific articles by two hundred authors, including esperantists, were published. Among the members were well-known interlinguists such as Otto Jespersen, Jules Meysmans, Alfred Michaux, Alice Vanderbilt Morris, Edgar de Wahl, Sylvia Pankhurst, etc./p>
Although "Academia pro Interlingua" had to be dissolved under the Mussolini regime, its value for the international planned language movement remains very important: i. a. it was successfully using, especially for scientific texts, the planned language Latino sine Flexione, proposed by Giuseppe Peano, under the name "Interlingua". Some of the members and collaborators of these Academy founded IALA (International Auxiliary Language Association), which in turn built a new planned language, used until now, which consciously adopted the name "Interlingua".
