Petrophysics (from the Greek “petra” = rock + physics) is the study of the physical and chemical properties of rocks and their fluid content, by direct or indirect analysis, with a quantitative purpose, applied mainly in the study of mineral and energy resources in the earth’s crust, especially (but not only) in the identification and evaluation of hydrocarbon accumulations at petroleum wells. Petrophysical Evaluation is the characterization of rocks and fluids by their physical properties, whether indirectly measured by well logging or directly measured from rock and fluid samples, especially for the purpose of identifying drilled rocks and their fluids and calculating the rock’s porosity and its saturation by hydrocarbon or water. With this presentation, those interested in the 2022 International Congress University will be able to first learn about the basic data needed for petrophysical analysis, such as natural gamma radiation, electrical resistivity (specific resistance), density and acoustic velocity, obtained by electrical logging in petroleum wells. They will then be able to understand the basic workflow of Petrophysical Evaluation for calculating the clay volume, porosity and fluid saturation of drilled rock layers. In addition, there will be a basic presentation on seismic data acquisition and interpretation, sedimentary geology, formation of petroleum systems and techniques for drilling petroleum wells, as these are knowledge necessary for the petrophysical analysis. Finally, there will be a presentation on the application of Petrophysics for the study of groundwater reserves and geothermal energy for sustainable development, as well as exercises to perform analysis and make calculations to determine whether the drilled rock layers in sedimentary basins are effective reservoirs for the exploitation of mineral and energy resources useful to society.
