News across borders: The geographical structure of international news
Jukka Pietiläinen
Abstract

Foreign news follows the same topics in almost every country, and its geographical structure is relatively similar in most countries in the world. Of the ten most frequently mentioned countries in international news, seven or eight are typically the same everywhere. These great powers in international news are the USA, the UK, France, Russia, Japan, China, Germany, and, among international organisations, the UN. It is a question of the slowly changing structures of international politics and the economy; only some of the most frequently mentioned countries in news are important merely because of events in the news.

The structure of a country’s international news also follows the country’s international trade. Similarly, the news reported follows countries with geographical or cultural ties more than otherwise. This can be seen, for example, in the flow of news between major European states and their former colonies in Africa. The role of international news agencies is not decisive in determining the geographical structure of news, but in less important and breaking news they have a more significant role. From smaller and less important countries usually only bad news and sports news is published. The paper also looks at changes in international news in the Internet era. In addition, the paper will address the alternative presented by the magazine Monato as a source of international news.
