Language is not just a carrier of knowledge and information but also an instrument of thought; it is the most important characteristic distinguishing humans from other animals. Language is an important carrier of culture and is itself an important constituent part of human culture. Language is also an important characteristic of ethnic groups.
Culture is civilisation of the spirit and an extremely valuable human product. With their individual cultures, the nations of the world form a multicoloured international culture whose existence and development is desirable. To conserve the colourfulness of human culture we must endeavour to protect national languages and cultures, particularly those of smaller ethnic groups.
Literature is language art that develops and enriches languages. It is an important constituent part of culture. By conserving and developing literature we can enrich culture. Zamenhof put great value on literature and was exemplary in creating Esperanto literature. By translating into Esperanto the literatures of different nations we enrich Esperanto’s literature and disseminate national literary treasures, which is good for cultural exchange and for protecting national cultures.
