We may hardly remember the slide rules which the oldest of us used in their childhood, but the development through history of such mathematical calculators is an interesting research topic: there are museums dedicated to it! This lecture will present the various mathematical calculators used before the (pocket) computers of today and will tackle the following questions: What calculators should be permitted in the teaching of mathematics? Is the teaching of mental calculation still useful?
