G. J. Ramstedt and his memoirs from Asia
Jouko Lindstedt
Abstract

Gustaf John Ramstedt (1873–1950) was one of the first Esperantists in Finland. He became a world-famous linguist, a pioneer of the scientific study of both Mongolian and Korean. He was also the first diplomatic representative of the newly independent Finland in Japan (1919–1929), and during his stay there he vastly cooperated with Japanese Esperantists.

Ramstedt authored two books of memoirs from Asia: Seitsemän retkeä itään 1898–1912 (‘Seven Journeys Eastward, 1898–1912’), published in 1944, and Lähettiläänä Nipponissa: muistelmia vuosilta 1919–1929 (‘Diplomat in Nippon: Memoirs from the Years 1919–1929’), which came out in the year of his death 1950. The first book contains interesting observations from the Russian Empire, Mongolia, and China, and often reads as an adventure novel. In the latter book, there are fewer adventures, but it is an interesting report of Japan of the time as well as of international politics in East Asia. It also describes the Esperanto scene of Japan. I am translating both books into Esperanto.
